PC Killer Apps

from the Shorts series

Computing power and computers are indistinguishable theses days.  Whether a laptop, tablet, mobile phone, games console, smart Tv ... the list can continue but you get the idea.  Computing power is used everywhere to provide us with rich content and vast number crunching capabilities.  But when computers, specifically personal computers, where first available what made then so popular and a necessary thing to have.

There are two killer apps for consideration that made the personal computer an everyday item.  In my opinion these are for language and for data, or numbers.

Wordstar was probably the most important early word processor and gave users the ability to prepare documents before putting to paper and save for reuse or modification.  How could anyone write a college/university paper without one - thank you word processors!

However, in my opinion the PC killer app has to be Lotus 1-2-3 (it followed Apple's VisiCalc and preceded Microsoft’s Excel).  For it’s time this was an extremely powerful application used for number crunching, data storage, and pretty much everything people thought possible.  It’s ability to be programmed with formulas to meet your needs was, at the time, incredible.  So, Lotus 1-2-3 gets my PC killer app award.
